ARTIST BIO

Thomas Newman OAM began his photographic hobby at the age of 12, developing and printing 120 620 roll and 35mm B&W with his trusty Canonflex, learning and refining the fascinating art of photographic composition. Now a septuagenarian, he still continues with the modern digital medium and applying the techniques learned over so long a time span.

In addition to his photographic interests, Tom is a strong advocate of voluntary community service. He has been dubbed the “Father of the Watch”, being the civilian co-architect of the Neighbourhood Watch programme in Australia. He was a Queen’s Baton relay runner for the 2006 Commonwealth Games and has been recognised for his community service with the Order of Australia Medal, a Rotary Paul Harris Fellowship and a “star” ground plaque in the Star Zone Karingal Walk of Fame.

He has exhibited and sold works at Chelsea, Knox and Langwarrin Art Shows. His photograph depicting Frankston Beach won 2nd prize in Frankston City's Photographic competition and is now used to promote the City. 'Kookaburras' received the Highly Commended Award at Knox Art Show and was reproduced in Australian Geographic magazine.
